After all this mess with my arrival and unpacking I woke up early and one of my first thoughts was that it would be nice to eat something and do some basic shopping like bedsheets, knife and some glasses. I think Banh Mi is one od the most popular things to eat in Vietnam for breakfast. Banh Mi is basically a grilled sandwich with meat or egg and some veggies. At university the most popular one is kebab it’s Banh Mi with some chicken meat and vegetables. This speciality costs 10000 dongs, something like 40 cents and at the same time it’s really tasty. After breakfast I want to the market to buy some bedsheets. Few time I was sleeping on bare ground through the whole festival but lets face it if I will be living there for two months I would like to have at least some minor luxuries.
Maybe market near the University is not a big place but I’m getting lost in places like that. The prices are a lot cheaper than in stores but, as a caucasian, male, between 18-50 I’m sure i was paying a bit more than local people but you can bargain. I am not really Scrooge kind of guy and if something is costing three times less than in Poland i will not have any problem with paying more than local people but I think sometimes it’s necessary . It’s easy because they usually don’t speak english and you don’t speak Vietnamese so they showing you the price, you showing you’re price with bill, they disagree, and you want to walk away so they stop you and taking your offer. It was my first day so I didn’t bargain for bedsheet so it cost me 70000 dongs something around 3 dollars.
Bars, Bars, Bars
After I get out from the market I went to store to buy some glasses, because it’s hard to drink vodka without it. After short walk I was in dorm. Few minutes later I was on my feet again to grab some beer with Hersh. In my opinion Vietnamese bars are one of the most beautiful places in the world . You pay 1$ per jug wich is filled from the keg standing next to the table. Beer is brewed in some of near by breweries and i’s really fresh and tasty. 5 stars.
Because I didn’t have any occasion to ride a motorbike in Vietnam I went with Boss and Mohit to our own Adventure, but first you can slay the dragons with empty belly so we’ve done pit stop for food. For this you pay something like 25k dongs so its like 1$. While wandering around we visited some shops and really I was thinking that people are copying mainly big brands, but when I saw Rammsten shoes for running I was stunned. And really if you are not buying your stuff on some kind of market Vietnam have similar prices to Plant, especially with big brands like H&M etc. We found shish in Vietnam but really in my opinion it was a bit overpriced 100k it’s like half of the polish price but here you are sitting on the street. And of course we wanted to finish this lovely evening with beer so we sat in one of these local bars. But let’s define bar because in Vietnam not only bars but most of the stores, restaurants or other places are placed on the ground floor. In front of the bar or restaurant are set some plastic chairs and tables and really I’m a big guy so it looks kind of funny when im sitting on a plastic chair that looks like designed for child . Vietnamese people are very kind people and in area of university we’re kind of an attraction, people are making pictures with us , saying hello all the time. While we were coming back some Vietnamese family invited us for tee, i need to admit that I really like this bitter green tea from a small cup. It was really something interesting because we are not speaking Vietnamese and their barely speaking english so most of the conversation was based on showing on hands or translating stuff in google translator. I’ve met there Vietnamese guy called Kolja(should be in russian :)) he was living in russia for 18 years and this time tabel turned because he was speaking russian and i was trying to respond in russian. Great Guy
